Axe identification guide. It's not buy and break, it's buy for cheap, abuse, use everyday, depend on, love, then replace when it's in its last leg. I've used my Recon improperly (and my Frontier Hawk for that matter) in ways that could've taken out TOPPS or Busse fixed blades, and the only thing I've had to replace on the hawk was a couple handles from my own fault, and CS sent me a freebie and an apology for their product 'failing' (their words, not mine, I knew it was my own damn fault). That's pretty fucking solid for a 25$ christmas present.
They're great hawks, they make awesome knives for good prices and their Axe is a dream to use. I've also never heard a negative thing about their swords from a few reenactors I fraternize with. I will support Cold Steel to my own death, because i know I'll have a CS product in my backpack or in my hands when I croak.
Buy a 30-inch Cold Steel replacement handle and put it on a Trail Hawk and you will see for yourself - you will never go back to shorter hawks except for use in concealing them IMHO, or all you want to do is throw them. I have twisted people's arms into buying longer hawks for a year now at the Hawk Project, and they have all agreed so far. Top is Cold Steel's Trail Hawk and bottom is the CRKT RMJ Woods Chogan T-Hawk here you can see both of the Hawks hammer strike face for comparison. The CRKT has a slight rounding to the strike face while the Cold Steel version is perfectly flat.
